There are people who change the world with armies, and then there are people who change it with a pen, a stubborn heart, and an absolutely wild imagination. Begum Rokeya was the second kind — and honestly, she might have been more dangerous than any army.

Born on December 9, 1880, in the quiet village of Pairaband in Rangpur, little Rokeya came into a world that had very specific plans for girls like her: stay inside, stay quiet, stay invisible. Her wealthy, conservative family followed strict purdah — the practice of keeping women hidden away from public life. Girls were not supposed to study. Girls were not supposed to have opinions. Girls were definitely not supposed to write books that would embarrass powerful men for centuries to come.

Rokeya, naturally, did all three.

She had two secret weapons growing up: her older brother Ibrahim and her older sister Karimunnesa. While the rest of the household slept, Ibrahim would sneak Rokeya candles and books, teaching her Bangla and English in the stillness of the night. Karimunnesa, who had once dreamed of studying herself before being pulled away, encouraged Rokeya to never stop learning. These midnight lessons — quiet, rebellious, and full of love — planted a seed that would grow into something no one in that household could have predicted.

In 1896, at the age of sixteen, Rokeya married Khan Bahadur Sakhawat Hossain, a deputy magistrate who was significantly older than her. But here is where the story takes a sweet turn. Unlike many husbands of that era, Sakhawat did not try to dim his young wife's fire. He fanned it. He encouraged Rokeya to read, to write, and to think as boldly as she wished. He even set aside money so that she could one day open a school for girls. In a time when most men considered an educated wife a threat, Sakhawat considered her a treasure. Their marriage, though short — he passed away in 1909 — was a genuine partnership built on mutual respect and shared dreams.

And when he was gone, Rokeya did exactly what they had planned together. She opened the Sakhawat Memorial Girls' School in Bhagalpur in 1909 with just five students. When family disputes forced her to move, she reopened the school in Calcutta in 1911, starting again from scratch with only eight girls. Eight. That is fewer students than most classrooms have chairs. But Rokeya did not count heads — she counted possibilities. By the time she was done, the school had grown into one of the most important educational institutions for Muslim women in all of Bengal. It still operates today, more than a hundred years later.

But Rokeya was not just a school founder — she was a writer with a wicked imagination. In 1905, she published Sultana's Dream, a short story written entirely in English that imagined a magical place called Ladyland. In Ladyland, women ran everything — the government, the universities, the science labs — while men stayed home behind curtains. It was funny. It was sharp. It was the kind of story that made you laugh first and think later. Scholars today consider it one of the earliest examples of feminist science fiction in the world. Let that sink in — a woman from rural Bengal, who taught herself to read by candlelight, wrote feminist science fiction before most of the world even had a word for it.

Her other major work, Padmarag (1924), told the story of women building a self-sufficient community — running their own schools, hospitals, and businesses — without waiting for anyone's permission. It was fiction, but it was also a blueprint. Rokeya was not just dreaming about a better world; she was drawing the map.

Beyond writing, Rokeya founded the Anjuman-e-Khawatin-e-Islam in 1916, an organization dedicated to uplifting women through education, employment, and awareness. She organized debates, held conferences, and went door to door convincing reluctant parents that their daughters deserved a future beyond four walls. She was tireless, persuasive, and occasionally very annoying to the people who preferred things the old way — which is exactly how you know she was doing it right.

Rokeya passed away on December 9, 1932 — her own birthday — at the age of fifty-two. She was found at her desk, mid-sentence, working on an essay about women's progress. Even death could not catch her idle.

Today, Bangladesh celebrates Rokeya Day every December 9. The Begum Rokeya Padak, one of the country's most prestigious awards, is given annually to women who have made outstanding contributions to society. Her face, her words, and her fierce spirit are woven into the identity of a nation that owes much of its progress on gender equality to a girl who once read by stolen candlelight.

She did not wait for the world to change. She wrote the world she wanted — and then she built it, one stubborn, beautiful step at a time.

১৮৮০ সালের ৯ ডিসেম্বর রংপুরের নিরিবিলি গ্রাম পায়রাবন্দে জন্ম নেওয়া ছোট্ট রোকেয়া এমন এক পৃথিবীতে এসেছিলেন, যেখানে মেয়েদের জন্য পরিকল্পনা ছিল খুবই পরিষ্কার — ঘরে থাকো, চুপ থাকো, অদৃশ্য থাকো। তাঁর ধনী, রক্ষণশীল পরিবার কঠোর পর্দাপ্রথা মেনে চলত — যেখানে নারীদের জনজীবন থেকে আড়ালে রাখা হতো। মেয়েদের পড়াশোনা করার কথা ছিল না। মেয়েদের মতামত দেওয়ার কথা ছিল না। আর মেয়েদের এমন বই লেখার কথা তো একদমই ছিল না, যা শত শত বছর ধরে ক্ষমতাবান পুরুষদের লজ্জায় ফেলবে।

রোকেয়া, স্বভাবতই, তিনটিই করেছিলেন।

বেড়ে ওঠার সময় তাঁর দুটি গোপন অস্ত্র ছিল: বড় ভাই ইব্রাহীম আর বড় বোন করিমুন্নেসা। বাড়ির সবাই যখন ঘুমাত, ইব্রাহীম চুপিচুপি রোকেয়ার জন্য মোমবাতি আর বই নিয়ে আসতেন, রাতের নীরবতায় তাঁকে বাংলা ও ইংরেজি শেখাতেন। করিমুন্নেসা, যিনি নিজেও একসময় পড়াশোনার স্বপ্ন দেখেছিলেন কিন্তু পারেননি, রোকেয়াকে উৎসাহ দিতেন কখনো শেখা থামাতে না। এই মধ্যরাতের পাঠ — নিঃশব্দ, বিদ্রোহী, এবং ভালোবাসায় ভরা — একটি বীজ বুনে দিয়েছিল, যা এমন কিছুতে পরিণত হবে যা সেই বাড়ির কেউ কল্পনাও করতে পারেননি।

লেখালেখির বাইরেও, রোকেয়া ১৯১৬ সালে আঞ্জুমান-এ-খাওয়াতীন-এ-ইসলাম প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন — শিক্ষা, কর্মসংস্থান ও সচেতনতার মাধ্যমে নারীদের উন্নয়নে নিবেদিত একটি সংগঠন। তিনি বিতর্কের আয়োজন করতেন, সম্মেলন করতেন, আর দরজায় দরজায় গিয়ে অনিচ্ছুক অভিভাবকদের বোঝাতেন যে তাদের মেয়েরাও চার দেয়ালের বাইরে একটি ভবিষ্যৎ পাওয়ার যোগ্য। তিনি ছিলেন অক্লান্ত, প্রত্যয়ী, এবং মাঝে মাঝে তাদের জন্য বেশ বিরক্তিকর যারা পুরোনো নিয়ম বজায় রাখতে চাইত — যা থেকেই বোঝা যায় তিনি সঠিক কাজটিই করছিলেন।

রোকেয়া ১৯৩২ সালের ৯ ডিসেম্বর — তাঁর নিজের জন্মদিনেই — বায়ান্ন বছর বয়সে মারা যান। তাঁকে পাওয়া গিয়েছিল তাঁর ডেস্কে, অর্ধেক বাক্যে, নারীদের অগ্রগতি নিয়ে একটি প্রবন্ধ লিখতে লিখতে। মৃত্যুও তাঁকে অলস অবস্থায় ধরতে পারেনি।

আজ বাংলাদেশ প্রতি বছর ৯ ডিসেম্বর রোকেয়া দিবস উদযাপন করে। বেগম রোকেয়া পদক — দেশের অন্যতম মর্যাদাপূর্ণ পুরস্কার — প্রতি বছর সেই নারীদের দেওয়া হয় যারা সমাজে অসামান্য অবদান রেখেছেন। তাঁর মুখ, তাঁর কথা, আর তাঁর তেজী চেতনা এমন একটি জাতির পরিচয়ে বুনে আছে, যে জাতি তার লিঙ্গ সমতার অগ্রগতির অনেকটাই ঋণী সেই মেয়েটির কাছে, যে একসময় চুরি করা মোমবাতির আলোয় পড়াশোনা করত।
